Description:

This rare, exquisite poster - dating to 1924 and announcing the first (and only) Salon of the Society of Antillean Artists in Pointe-a-Pitre, Guadeloupe - is considered to be one of the finest examples of poster-art executed in the first quarter of the 20th century. Its creator, Germaine Casse (ca. 1860-1930), was of French-Creole descent, and her reputation as a highly-skilled pioneering female artist continues to grow today, with her lushly-colored tropical studies in the manner of Paul Gauguin steadily increasing in value and stature. In addition to exhibiting her work at the Paris Salon and being praised in Opportunity magazine for her “distinctive and distinguished” treatment of the indigenous Caribbean population, she was awarded the Chevalier de la Légion d’Honneur, France’s premier commendation for meritorious civil achievement.
